Livestock Supply Chain

As we know Ethiopia is one of the richest countries in terms of livestock population and listed in top ten all over the world. Ethiopia has some important comparative advantages in the Middle East livestock and meat market. Geographical proximity to Egypt and the Gulf makes both live animal exports and chilled meat exports possible. The national herd, consisting of about 55.2 million cattle, 29 million sheep and goats, 4.5 million camels and close to 50 million poultry, produces currently about 1,128 metric tons (MT) of meat, 174 million eggs and 5.2 billion liters of milk per year.

According to researches live animal exports are high. It is estimated that around 1.6 million livestock are exported from the country annually. However, the vast majority of the exchange passes through informal channels (illegal markets) which take around approximately 1.4 million livestock exchange. The main cause for the expansion of the illegal market is the inefficiency of the traditional livestock market in the country.

The existing traditional animal market system in Ethiopia is complicated and challenging for sellers, buyers and regulators. The main challenge in the current livestock trading system includes lack of transparency, weak livestock health control system, long value chain process, high price for consumer, low value for farmers, farmers are exposed to theft and lack of adequate market information. The main reason for this problem is lack of computer aided animal marketing mechanism and most of animal markets in Ethiopia pass through informal way; there is no recording and tracking system of the livestock.
